Born in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, Vicente Xiloj is the sixth of 10 siblings and the son of Vicente Xiloj Alvarez and Casimira Lopez. He started working at the age of 13 on cardamom, macadamia and coffee farms. Still at a young age, he began working for the Ridingers as part of their security staff, where he was introduced to the art of Jade carving. A beautiful mint green jade elephant was the first piece he completed. He developed a special skill in the making of mosaic jade masks.
